Foot Locker Nationals - 12/13/08 at Balboa Park in San Diego, CA

Race Recaps:

On ustream.tv, they had live coverage of the races. In the girl's race, McClaughlin
took a lead right from the start and held it till the three mile mark when Jordan Hasay
blew by her for the win. Hasay passed Brasovan and McClaughlin with 400m to go to
win the national championship in 17:22. Complete results
HERE.

On the boy's side, Schwartz was with the lead group at the km mark. At 4 minutes
into the race they were running 5 a breast. At the mile, Schwartz took the lead briefly
and went through the mile in 4:47. At the halfway mark, he was in the top 15 and was
in the top 10 at the two mile point. He went through the two mile in under ten minutes
and was in 7th.

With less than a mile to go Chris moved up into 5th place. With 600 to go Chris
was in 8th place. In the end, Schwartz came in 8th in a time 15:41, just behind 6th and
7th place. What an amazing year for an amazing athlete. I look forward to this year's
track season.

Yep, he really is that good.

Foothill senior Chris Schwartz finished eighth in the Foot Locker Cross Country
National Championships on Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego, just one spot lower
than he finished in the Division III state championships two weeks ago.

"It feels really good," Schwartz said. "I wanted to be in the top 10, and I got it."

Schwartz was 37th of 40 runners in this race last year.

This year, he ran the 5-kilometer course in 15:41. Solomon Haile of Sherwood High in
Silver Spring, Md., won the race in 15:15.

Trevor Dunbar of Kodiak, Alaska, whom Schwartz beat at last week's Western
Regional, finished second in 15:22.

Schwartz said he ran close to the front of the pack during the whole race, and that he
couldn't catch any runners in front of him late -- though no one caught him, either.

"I ran really well," he said. "I can't ask for anything more than that."

Race Preview:
Foothill senior Chris Schwartz will run at 10 a.m. today for a national title at the
Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego.
Foothill's Chris Schwartz, who won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship
West Regional last week in Walnut, will race in a national event today.  Schwartz, who
was a Division I state champion as a junior and finished seventh as a senior in Division
III, won the Western Regional race last weekend in Walnut with a 15:38, beating out
Brian Shrader of Flagstaff, Ariz. (15:42) and Trevor Dunbar of Kodiak, Alaska (15:
43). Dunbar had beat Schwartz at the Mt. SAC Invite earlier this fall.  Schwartz also
avenged another defeat, beating San Diego-University City's Mac Fleet, who won the
D-III state race. Fleet was 35th in 16:34 at the Western Regional.  Schwartz finished
37th of 40 entrants at the national race last year, running a 16:15. He has said he
hopes for a top-5 finish this time around.

Chris Schwartz wasn't after redemption from last week's disappointing seventh-place
finish in the CIF Division III State Meet. The Foothill senior was focused on one thing
in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship West Region: Avenging a loss to
Trevor Dunbar of Kodiak (Alaska) High School. More
