The Best Boys Team Time at Woodward Park is 77:22 (15:28 average) by Mead
High School (Washington) in 1993. Last year, the best central valley time was run
by Buchanan at the Clovis Invite. Below are the best team times by our local Kern
County teams.

- They have nine state titles and have been so close to the tenth. With four sub seventeeners returning, they
will most certainly win another valley title but that is not their goal. Throughout the summer, McFarland is
hosting a 5k race series on their hollowed training grounds and you should run these events especially
since this is where they are planning on having the Jim White Invite this fall.
- DyeStatCal has ranked McFarland as the top team in the valley in division four. "McFarland should
continue the school’s super tradition, as the defending Champs here bring back a young group of four
from the 2008 titlests. Juniors Marco Perez (3rd 08 D4) and Francisco Nava (4th 08 D4 - 4:33-10:03
track) along with senior Marco Camargo (7th 08 D4) and Eduardo Bautista (9th 08 D4) will be tough to

- In 2007, Baker and Solis were a quick pair of sophomores who dominated the frosh/soph competition in
not only cross country but track too. In 2008, Garcia and Lewis joined them and made them a very good
team as noted by having four runners in the top 15 at valley. . Now this foursome returns after a very
successful track season looking to match the Lady Wolf Pack's valley title from 2008. If they can pick up a
fifth runner who can go sub seventeen, they maybe the first team besides McFarland to break 85 minutes
at Woodward.
- DyeStatCal has ranked Ridgeview as the second best team in the valley in division three. "Ridgeview
(Bakersfield) was third in 2008 here, with Robby Baker (8th 2008 D3), Brian Solis (10th 08 D3), and
Jerrid Lewis (11th 08 D3 - 1:54.63 track 800) heading the top four who return for 2009." Complete

- After being a bridesmaid at valley 2 years in a row, the Scotsmen are ready to take a valley crown. Their
top trio are now seniors and they know how to win. Throw in a large squad of athletes and Coach
Mayberry's formula for peaking the team at the right time and the title should be theirs this year.
- DyeStatCal has ranked Highland as the top team in the valley in division two. "Highland (Bakersfield)
was second in 2008 at this level, with the top five returning, led by Jake Van Zandt (8th 2008 CC - 1:

- Also add into the mix that Mayberry is rumored to be retiring soon. I am sure his athletes would like to
recreate Centennial's send off of Coach Randy Jones in 2007. Coach Jones got the valley title over
Highland in his final year of coaching.

- The Post - Schwartz era will begin with assistant coach Paul Contreras taking over the program. He is a
former Trojan who ran for the legendary Foothill coach Ted Oliver. Foothill has had large turnouts over the
past years and will be competitive despite the graduation of Schwartz.

had a large squad and if a couple of their younger runners step up, they could be good. Unfortunately,

- Despite running 16:32 (second best Bakersfield time) and coming in 15th overall, Curtis did not qualify
for the state meet.

- This past track season Shafter put on quite a show in the distance events. Coach Sundgren had at least
ten athletes under 5 minutes for the 1600 and several broke ten in the 3200 as well. This fall they should
be a team to watch.

- Breaking 90 minutes at Woodward is sort of a milestone for local squads. To have five runners average
under 18 minutes for a 5k is a sign that your program is heading in the right direction. With Matt Darr co-
winning a state track & field title, perhaps the Titan harriers will be motivated to train hard this summer
and move up the local rankings. They have had good size teams in the past and all but one of their varsity
athletes are returning.
