Ridgeview High Runners Shine At California Relays

After a couple weeks of competing against each other, many top Kern County high school track & field athletes hit the
road to test themselves against other California state schools.

With budget cuts and the weak economy, many fine athletes had to stay home. But for those that endured the early
morning wake up, the long uncomfortable van or bus ride and the long hours of waiting for their event, it was worth it.

Local distance powerhouse Ridgeview High School had some excellent early season times in many events at the
California Relays in Cerritos. And while the Ridgeview High girls ran well, their boys excelled.

Junior Jerrid Lewis got seventh in the Invitational 800 (the fastest division) and went sub-2 minutes in the event (1:
59.97). Robby Baker Jr. and Alex Garcia broke the 10-minute barrier in the 3200 with times of 9:43.74 and 9:58.18.
Lastly, their boys’ 4 x 800 team took second to the country’s fastest team (Dana Hills) in a time of 8:16.93.

Shafter High School traveled to the Atascadero Invite where Anna Jelmini (the nation’s top thrower) continued her
domination in the event. She won the shotput by over 10 feet and the discus by 42 feet.

The Golden West Invitational in Visalia drew the most local schools this weekend. Liberty High School, Stockdale High
School and Frontier High School all competed at this meet. On the boys side there were quite a few top three
performances:

  • Ridgeview has several male athletes on this list. Isiah Purvis (200), Johnny Carter (100 and triple & long jump),
    Singh 300 hurdles and their relay squads. On the girls side, Lynch made the 800 list.
  • Driller boys on the list were Walter Hunt (100), Gabe Cardenas (triple jump) and the 400 relay. Lady Drillers on
    the list are Brushay Wandick (100/200) who has the fastest 200 time and Shinead McDonald in the hurdles.
  • Liberty boys Ryan Taylor (400) and Affentranger (long jump). Lady patriots were Klinchuch leading the pole
    vault.
  • Foothill's Chris Schwartz is on the 1600 and 3200 lists.
  • Matt Darr (Frontier) leads the boy's throws list and his teammate Taylor Jackson rules the hurdles list.
  • In the girl's throws Jelmini (Shafter) and Collatz (Stockdale) are one two and Collatz leads the triple jump too.

Culver City Relays

  • Quick recap: Robby Harris went 6 foot in the high jump so now the Drillers have 3 of them. Gabe Cardeans
    (42'6) got second in the triple jump. The boys won the 4 x 200 and the girls got 3rd in the event. The Lady
    Drillers also took second in the 1600 relay.

Ridgeview attended this meet at the 2008 state meet track. They had a fine showing in the distance races. They got
second in the boys 4 x 800 and two of their athletes (Baker & Garcia) broke ten minutes in the 3200. Two of their
outstanding sophomores (Hobson/sprints and Carter jumps) did not compete. Jerrid Lewis  went sub two minutes in the
800 too.
