    Looks like the 2009 Arcadia meet was a good one for Kern County. Most of the schools and athletes
that attended had season PRs and/or some eye opening competition to get them ready for the upcoming
championship season. I would like thank RunnerSpace.Com for their amazing coverage of the meet!

   At Arcadia, there are many different event divisions. Saturday is the NIGHT to compete at. The top races
are the invite races on Saturday night followed by the seeded races. The Saturday day events are next and
in some events, the top performers get to compete in the Saturday night events. If one competes on
Saturday night, you are one of the best in the state and hence one of the best in the nation.

   Friday night (my favorite) is the "Rising Stars" field events and the "Burnin Batons" relays. Often there
are four heats of each event.  The fastest is the invite, followed by seeded, rated and open.

   Of course, just competing in any event at Arcadia is a huge accomplishment and is often the highlight of
a track & field athlete's season. In many of the Friday night events, it is easier to make the valley meet then
get into Arcadia. Below is a school by school recap of how their athletes did at Arcadia. Many of the links
below go to video of the event or complete results of the event.

  • Shafter as usual had the best showing at this meet. Anna Jelmini (12) continued to dominate the throws with
    wins in the shot and discus. Her teammate Lacey Rasley (10) won the open shot put competition and got to
    throw in the night invitational meet too. Shafter High senior Anna Jelmini threw a personal-best 185 feet, 5
    inches in the discus Saturday at the Arcadia Invtational. Jelmini, the national leader in the event, broke the
    meet record by 5 feet. She also won the shot put (51-11/2), equaling a meet record. Modesto's Suzy Powell
    holds the national girls high school record of 188-4. Powell set the mark in 1994.
  • Liberty's Amanda Klinchuch also competed in th Saturday night invite in the pole vault and came in 12th. Erica
    Wilcox (11) came in third in her heat of the open 400 on Saturday and Marty Affentranger (12) came in
    second in his open heat of the 400 also. Marty anchored the 1600 relay which came in third in their open heat
    on Saturday and came in second in the long jump on Friday night. More 1600 relay photos HERE.
  • Frontier had two athletes in the invite part of the meet too. Taylor Jackson ran the 100 (4th) and 300 hurdles
    (5th) and Matt Darr throw the shot (6th) and discus (4th).
  • Garce's Phillip McCullum (11) went up against three seven foot plus high jumpers on Saturday night and came
    in tenth with a jump of 6'5 (season best is 6'8).
  • In a much anticipated race, Foothill's Chris Schwartz took off with a quick (65 seconds) first lap in the invite
    3200. He lead a large field through the first 1600 in around 4:30 and then started moving backwards through
    the large field and ended up coming in last place with a time of 9:51.Three runners broke nine minutes and 16
    went under 9:10.
  • Ridgeview's (men) 4 x 400 team came in third in the seeded race on Saturday night. State champ Johnny
    Carter (10) came in tenth in the triple jump on Saturday night. He also came in 4th in the open long jump. On
    Saturday morning, Ridgeview's (men) 4 x 100 team was the fastest local squad and 24th out of 54 teams that
    competed in the 400 relay. Besides running on the 4 x 800 and  4 x 400 teams, Jerrid Lewis came in 6th in the
    open 800 on Saturday. Ridgeview's (men) 4 x 800 came in third in their seeded race on Friday night. Another
    multi-eventer was Isaih Purvis (12) who came in second in his heat of the open 400 on Saturday.
  • Stockdale's Alex Collatz (10) came in second behind Jelmini in the discus. She was 22 feet behind Jelmini and
    24 feet in front of third place.
  • On Saturday morning, Centennial's (men) 4 x 100 relay was the second best local squad and came in 25th
    out of 52 teams. Centennial's (men) 4 x 400 came in fourth in their heat of the open 400 on Saturday.
    Centennial (men) also ran the open 4 x 200 on Friday and came in second in their heat in front of Bakersfield
    High.  On friday night the Centennial men came in 4th in their heat of the open 1600 sprint medley. Alana
    Alexander came in 18th in the open triple jump on Saturday.
  • West's 4 x 100 relay team came in 39th out of 52 on Saturday morning. George Robbins came in third in the

  • Bakersfield High's (men) 400 relay team was 40th overall out of 52 schools competing. The Lady Drillers came
    in 19th out of 56 schools in the 400 relay. Brushay Wandick came in 8th in her heat's of the open 100 and
    open 200. On Friday night the Driller men and women competed in the  4 x 200s and the 1600 sprint medleys.
    The men came in 3rd in their open heat of the 4 x 200 and 6th in the open 1600 sprint medley. The Lady
    Drillers came in 3rd in their open heat of the 4 x 200 and 3rd in their seeded heat of the 1600 sprint medley.
  • Golden Valley's Matt Jones (12) came in 7th in his heat of the 110 hurdles on Saturday morning.
  • McFarland's girls came in 20th in the seeded 4 x 800 and their boys came in 21st in the seeded 4 x mile relay
    on Friday.

  • Ridgeview Boys got third in the Seeded 4 x 800.
  • Centennial boys came in second in the Open 4 x 200 and the Drillers came in third.

  • Nice 2:02 average for the Wolf Pack boys. They dropped almost six seconds from their season best at the
    Pasadena Games and 15 seconds from their season opening effort at the EB Invite.
  • Robby Baker (11) lead off with a 2:03 and was in tenth or so when he handed it of to Brian Solis who got them
    up into 6th place with a 2:02. Then Alex Garcia ran in the 2:02 range and moved them up into 5th. Jerrid
    Lewis smoked a 56 opening 400 and got them into third with a lap to go. On the backstretch of the last lap he
    moved them into second place but was passed on the homestretch and ran about a 2:02 also.

  • Once again the Golden Hawks beat the Drillers. Ariey (Driller 12) ran a Pr in the 800 of around 2:06. He ran
    the first 400 in 61 and came back in a 65. Entering the final 800, Centennial was in second and the Drillers
    were in fourth.

  • Driller's went seven seconds faster this year. Sarah Baker (10) PRed in the 800 with a 2:21 split. Their time
    would have been third in the invite race too.
  • Brushay Wandick lead with a 26 second 200, way out in lane nine and gave the lead to Asha Brown and they
    did the first 400 under in under 52. Felisa Torres ran a little over 60 for the 400 and had the lead for a little
    while. She gave the baton to Sarah Baker and the Drillers were in third place. Sarah ran the first 400 in a little
    under 67 and ran the last lap in under 74 for a sub 2:21 800 split

Meet History:
  • The meet started in 1968 but it was a decade before Bakersfield made an impact. In 1979, Linda Goen
    (North) won the 800 in a time of 2:10.5 and the 1500 in 4:31.8.
  • In 1984, Terrance Strong (Bakersfield) jumped 50-11.25 to win the Triple Jump.

  • In 1990, Melilsa Weis (Bakersfield) 169-09 won the Discus.
  • In 1992, Eventual Gatorade National Athlete of the Year Jeff Buckey (Bakersfield) had the whole show rocking
    early with a 208-11 Discus win. Marques Holliwell (West Bakersfield) became the first frosh male athlete to win
    an event at Arcadia when he took a close 100 (4 within .01) at 10.80
  • In 1996, Van Mounts threw 62-07.5 to win the Boys Shot Put.
  • In 2002, Rachel Varner won the shot put with a throw of (Bakersfield) 48-04.5.
