I woke up to frost on the ground and then the fog rolled in too. So after a few years
of  fogless "Doin' it in the Fog" runs, we got a foggy one. There were over 600 runners
and the registration line was long and as usual, the race was delayed in starting.

This seems to be a tradition at the fog run. Probably because many decide to run it
late and/or wait to see what the weather will be like. Plus some use it to kick off their
New Year's resolution and miss out on the early pre-registration. After a 20 minute
delay, the race was finally started. It was really cold by then and I am sure the wait
froze quite a few of the athletes. Their is nothing like a sub 40 degree day with fog.
The chill goes to ones bones, so the start of the race must have felt good

I always stand about 200 yards from the start and shoot pictures. I also stand there
to make sure runners make it through the tight opening in the fence. As you can tell
from
my photos, the start is fast and furious. Leading the race at the start was Robby
Baker (Ridgeview) and Chris Schwartz (Foothill) with a number of local high school
cross country runners on their heels.

After making it through the tight gate, the race heads out on the bike path that runs
along the backside of Lake Ming. This path is fairly new, flat and very fast and
Schwartz lead the 600 strong field through the first few miles. The runners go out and
back on the bike path and I usually stand near the 5k and 10k intersection.

At this intersection the 5k goes left and the finish is about a quarter mile away. The
10k goes right and heads through the campground and around CALM Zoo. There are
a number of hills out on the last three miles of the course and those who go out to fast
on the pancake flat first 3 miles of the race, can lost quite a bit of time on the second
half of the course.

The first runner to go by was no surprise, Schwartz had a sizable lead after only 2.75
miles of the race.
David Bacus was a behind him aways and made up quite a bit of
ground by the end of the 10k. Following him were the lead 5k pack and then some
10kers behind them. I usually try to shot till the leading women run by before heading
back to the finishline.

As I headed back to the finishline, I could hear
Peter Wonderly doing what he does
best, MCing an event. He was calling out finishing times and runners names that could
be hear all around the lake. I got back to the finish and try to help out with identifying
runners and also kept an eye out for the first 10k finishers too.

Soon I saw Schwartz (34:17) weaving his way through the slower 5kers on his way to
the finishline. He looked like he was pushing it a bit and then I saw how close Bacus
was and knew why. I feel sorry for Bacus (34:19) because he often comes in second
at local races. Often it is
Galvin Gonzales (2 time state cross country champ for
McFarland) who is in front of him. Today was a different race but the same result,
another state champ was in front of him.

  • I learned later on that Bacus actually took the lead in the 10k. With a half mile to go, Chris had to throw in
a big surge to overcome David's 100 yard lead.

In fact, last year Galvin won the 10k in a time of 32:48 and was closely followed by
Alfonso Cisneros (McFarland senior) in a time of 34:07 for third place. Bacus came in
5th last year in a time of 34:49. 2008 10k results
HERE.

A few minutes later
Andrew Edquist (Driller senior) came in followed by Ivan of
Highland. My son came in real slow in around 39 minutes and had to immediately leave
the finish because nature was calling. Unfortunately, his place in the race got lost and
he did not make the official results, which we did not find out about till after we left the
race.

About a minute after him, Anna Vanderstelt was the first women in a time of 40:08.

What was nice this year is
Jonathan Wykoff and company were manning the
computers and results were posted shortly after runners finished and the awards were
handed out promptly.
I did not see the 5k finish but I do know Robby Baker of Ridgeview won in a time of 17:
23 and Pam Boyles was the first woman in a time of 20:19. Robby's time was just a
few seconds faster than the fastest woman last year.

Maija Rohoe ran 17:28 last year and came in 6th overall. Amazingly she beat a
couple of the varsity McFarland High school runners. She was the cross country coach
for CSUB in 2007 and then got married and moved away.

Last year's overall winner, Ryan Lucker (CSUB track athlete) ran 15:54 and was
followed by a pack of McFarland runners. This year, McFarland's Highs cross country
team and Lucker did not compete. Complete 2008 5k results

10k Results Recap:
  • Chris Schwartz won the 10k in 34:17 and was closely followed by David Bacus in
34:19. Which is closer than any local runner has gotten to Chris in recent years.
Schwartz hopes to go to Cal Poly Slo next year and came in 8th at the Foot
Locker Nationals last month and was named Dyestatcal's senior runner of the
year too! Last year in track, he came in 2nd in the 3200 at state and broke 9
    minutes for the event.
  • This is only the second time, I have seen Chris at a local road race. In 2007, he
won the 10k at Ron's Run. His coaches keep him under wraps in the off season. I
never see him except during the season. Fortunately, he gave up playing
basketball for Foothill last year and I look forward to seeing in action this track
    season.
  • In third, was senior Driller Andrew Edquist who was given a time of 35:19, which I
am sure he would take but on my watch and on the time stamp on my camera
show him running in the low 36 minute range. This would jive with him telling me
that he ran with Highland's Ivan Esquivias, who came in 4th in a time of 36:20 and
won the 13 to 15 age group.
  • Ivan was a freshman this year and was a big part of Highland's league title this
year. He was always in their top five and was often the reason they won many
    meets.
  • Another victim of finish chute was my son, Christopher Anderson (senior Driller).
With a half mile to go, nature called and he had to jog into the finish and then
leave the chute asap to take care of business. Some how his tag did not get
turned in so he is not in the official results. His Garmin GPS had him at 39:16,
which would of placed him 5th or 6th in the 10k that his watch measured as 6.16
    miles.
  • Not to far behind Christopher, was Anna Vanderstelt in 40:08. Anna ran a
marathon in 3:19, this past year in San Francisco btw. At 40:32, recently retired
Bruce Deeter took the 50 to 59 division over Mike Toland who ran 43:13.
  • Another Driller, Sara Stidham ran 56:03 and took second in her age group and
beat her mom (Tabitha Raber) by over a minute. Their combine parent/child time
was beat by the Edquists however. Andrew ran around 36 flat and his dad
    clocked in at 1:13:15.

5k Results Recap:
  • With a half mile to go, Arvin's Juan Calderon ran by me and I asked him which
race he was running and he said the 5k. Then Ridgeview's Baker passed by and
asked me what race Juan was running and I told him. Then he picked up his pace
and caught Juan and beat him by 6 seconds, 17:23 to 17:29. I spoke to Robby
about his first state performance and he described it as "fast". His team almost
made state and looks to qualify next year because the whole team will be
returning. Plus his track team is looking real good too. They have sprinters,
distance guys and jumpers too. Last year, Johnny Carter won the triple jump at
state and he was only a freshman!
  • In third, was recently married Andrew Mockett in a time of 18:24. Half a minute
behind Andrew was the first 60 to 69 year old runner! Herve Pastre ran 18:57 and
beat South High's David Little (19:40) and Stockdale's Dao Anthony (19:42). Sixty
plus year olds should not beat varsity high school cross country runners but then
again Herve is no ordinary runner.
  • Speaking of extraordinary runners, Pam Boyles won the 5k and the 40 to 49 age
group with a 20:19 clocking. Pam has been winning races in these parts for years
and is a top age group runner nationally too. Her husband coaches cross country
and track at CSUB and all of you should participate at the Lee Adams Open in on
    Feb. 21st.
  • Speaking of top age groupers, Tommy Valles (20:08), Joey Fitzpatrick (20:40)
and Boston Fitzpatrick (21:05) came 1,2,3 in the 12 and under race which 29
runners in it. Tommy beat his dad (21:41) too and looks to be continuing the
Mcfarland tradition. The Fitzpatricks and many more run for the Rosedale Racers
club which is coached by Ryan Ronald who ran 19:37 and came in 8th place.
Click HERE for my coverage of their USATF cross country results.
  • It was good to see Scott Rosenlieb out there, he came in 3rd in the 50 to 59 with
a time of 20:42. Scott has been throwing down quick times for years and can be
seen around town cycling all the time.
  • Another long time runner who is quickly becoming known as Sarah's mom is Sally
Baker who was the second women overall with a time of 22:41 which was faster
than two time league cross country champ Sarah's 25:25 time. Sarah took it easy
since she is in the middle of soccer season for the Drillers. Of course Sarah could
not help chasing down her little sister Maggie, who won the 12 and under race
    with a time of 25:44.
  • Maggie's friend, Auggie Lerma cam in 3rd in the 12 and under with a time of 26:
    44. Auggie's sister also runs for the Drillers.
  • Our meet director, Robert Barton threw in a 23:16 and then took care of the
awards and such. I forgot to ask him where his daughter Ashley was because she
is a really good runner for Liberty High school.
  • Future Driller, Scott Van Matre ran 23:35 and we look forward to him running at
BHS in the near future and trying to beat his brother David's marks.

Race Preview below:

This years Fog Run marks our Twentieth Annual Event.  We've worked to improve it
every year and believe that's why it's increased in popularity to the point where we
had 500 people register for last years event.  We offer a long sleeve wicking t-shirt to
all entrants.  The setting at Lake Ming is beautiful with the crisp, clear winter air in the
morning.  The courses for the 5 and 10K are unique to our event with a mixture of
pavement and dirt to run on.  At the finish, you get a hot pancake and sausage
breakfast and an opportunity to socialize with your friends.  We always try to have lots
of door prizes because not everyone is able to win a trophy.  Finally, participants get
the satisfaction or knowing that 100% of the net income from the event (our
organization is all volunteer) goes to aid crime victims in Kern County.  This year we're
Fog Run XX but just wait until we turn 21.  Life.....run for it.
