2009 Kern County Championships


Meet Recap:

    No official results yet but Ridgeview's Tijerra Lynch won the girl's race and her school mate Robby Baker took
    the boys race. The girl's race was a big pack with a half mile to go and then Sarah Baker (Bakersfield) and
    Lynch broke away from the group. The two ran side-by-side much of the way until Lynch began to pull away
    coming off the final hill and finished in 18:20. Baker ran 18:25 and lost the 5 seconds in the final 100 or so yards.

    Stockdale wound up with a sweep of the varsity, junior varsity and frosh-soph team titles. Stockdale's varsity
    scored 52 points, followed by Ridgeview's 67 and North with 108. Freshman Riddhi Patel finished third to lead
    the Mustangs, completing the course in 18:54.1. Amber Nelson joined Patel in the Top 10, placing 10th in 19:15.

    The boys race went the way most thought the girl's would. With two front runners and the rest aways behind.
    Robby Baker (15:01) and Alex Garcia (15:03) took off from the field and had a sizable lead in the early miles. In
    the end, Alex took the lead but then both went of course in the confusion of the finishing area. When they got
    back on course, Robby had taken the lead and the win.

    The Wolf Pack had three runners in the Top 5 and enough points to beat McFarland for the team title. Ridgeview
    had 57 points, followed by McFarland at 66 and Stockdale with 84.

    According to many long time cross country coaches and fans, the course was shorter this year. They estimate it
    was up 20 to 30 seconds short around the two mile mark. In the past, the race goes down the narrow bridge past
    the rest rooms then turns left on to the road. At the fork in the road, this year they went right and stayed on the
    road. In the past they went left for awhile and then turned right at the big tree. Then they cut across the grass to
    the main road.

    According to the race director (Foothill coach Paul Contreras):

    "I changed the course based on the fact that I measured the course three times and on the first two times the
    course was long, longer than a 5k. The third time both Setser (Ridgeview coach) and I  measured it and we
    stayed on the road by the 2 mile mark and when we finished it was very close to 3 miles.I remember running
    that course many times when I was in high school and we stayed on the road and the 2 mile mark was right by
    the bathroom.  I know that some people say there is history involved and I understand but if we are going to
    call it a 3 mile race then it should be a 3 mile course."

    I do know that in the past, the course map was labelled as a 5k. This change of the course does explain the 20 to
    30 second improvements made by the athletes. Staying on the road makes more logical sense and is a lot
    faster then running on the grass too. The only issue is how one attempts to compare old course times (At least
    2007 and 2008, which I personally attended.) to the new layout. Also it means everyone has to move around the
    course a little faster so one does miss all the exciting action.

    Speaking of the course. I like the course and it is very similar to the one I ran way back when but we need a new
    one. The main reason is safety. There are just too many cars driving around during the meet. That and the
    course crosses too many roads. Now Alfred Harrell is truly dangerous and there are officers at those crossings
    but no one is in charge of the rest of the park.

    I am not blaming anyone but this situation is an accident waiting to happen. Another problem are the spectators
    after they get out of their cars. Many seem clueless about where the course is going or that a race is even going
    on. Athletes are having to dodge people as they run and often go the wrong way because of the fans on the
    course.

    Today's varsity boys finish was marred by spectators getting in the way and causing confusion for the athletes.
    Alex was leading Robby and both were running fast when they came into the finish area. As they were sprinting
    in, people were darting in front of them and around them. Alex went left instead of straight and Robby followed
    but recovered quicker from his error.

    I think that the course that is used for the BC Invite would be an ideal course for the Kern Invite and league
    meets. Of course it won't be on a weekend any more due to soccer but the 5k course at the soccer complex is
    safe and challenging and would be a better preparation for Woodward Park. I want to see our athletes compete
    at their best and not have to worry about cars and spectators getting in their way.

    This race is "THE" local race because everyone shows up for it. It is the weekend before most league
    championships and there are no divisions at this meet. So it is put up or shut up time. Sure some will say that
    they are holding back or training through this meet but when the athletes get on that starting line they know that it
    is showtime.

    After the completion of all the races there will be an awards presentation to all team and individual award
    winners.

    This year it is especially so because so many teams have been skipping local meets and running elsewhere. At
    the EB Invite, many of the top squads (Ridgeview, Shafter, McFarland and Wasco were M.I.A.) ran elsewhere.
    Then at the Wolf Pack, teams like Stockdale, Taft and East did not compete. But they should all be at the Kern
    Championships and will be trying to beat defending champs McFarland (boys) and the Ridgeview (girls).

    On the individual side, Ridgeview's Tijerra Lynch looks to defend her title. Whereas on the boy's side there will
    be a new champion with the graduation of Foothill's Chris Schwartz. The girl's race should be a matchup
    between 2008 SEYL champ Sarah Baker (Driller) vs 2008 SWYL champ Tijerra Lynch who have managed to
    avoid running against one another this whole season. Not on purpose mind you because I am sure both want to
    run against the best.
