Kern Invitational Liberty HS, Bakersfield, CA - Friday, March 13, 2009
Meet Recap: On a beautiful spring evening, the individual winners in most of the Kern Invitational events were more predictable then the mercurial spring weather. But predictability does not equal ennui. There is enjoyment in watching the best local high school track and field athletes dominate their events. Much like seeing a play you know by heart or a concert, there is still enjoyment in a fine performance.
On the girl’s side, it was very much a repeat of earlier meets. Tijerra Lynch won the 800, 1600 and 3200 and scored almost half of Ridgeview High School’s total points for a fourth place team finish. Bakersfield High School was lead by senior Brushay Wandick who won the 100 and 200. Her depleted 400 relay team took second and she put her 1600 relay team into first place with her gutsy third leg and Keirra White kept the Drillers in the lead.
In the girl’s team race, Liberty High School ended up taking first with 73 points over Bakersfield High’s 69 points. Liberty High only had one individual winner the whole evening but took the win with a lot thirds, fourths and fifths through out the night. Amanda Klinchuch was Liberty High’s only first and she did it on one good foot. She hurt herself vaulting at the East Bakersfield relays and will be wearing a boot for a month per doctor’s orders. She was allowed to vault and vault she did. She went 11′ 6, which was also the winning height of the boy’s competition!
Last but not least Taylor Jackson (Frontier High School) and Anna Jelmini (Shafter High School) dominated the hurdles and throws. These two athletes are some of the best technicians in their events besides having raw natural talent. In both the hurdles and the throws, it take years of practice to make such athleticism look effortless.
For the next month these ladies will be competing in dual meets for their schools and heading out of town for various invitationals like the West Coast Relays and Arcadia. They won’t be on the same track until April 24 when Liberty High School hosts the Patriot Games.
Girls finals results
- Liberty 73 Bakersfield 69 Frontier 61.5
- 100--1. Wandick, BHS, 12.53; 2. Herron, High, 12.87; 3. Watson, Stock, 12.87. Brushay Wandick is a
senior and definitely does not have senioritis. Her eyes are on the state meet and hopes to return with her teammates this year.
- 200--1. Wandick, BHS, 26.15; 2. Epps, Han. West, 26.65; 3. Wilcox, Lib, 27.15. Wandick went to state in
this event in 2008.
- 400--1. White, BHS, 1:02.66; 2. Epps, Han. West, 1:02.91; 3. Chudy, Cen, 1:03.42. Sophomore White just
got off the basketball court.
- 800--1. Lynch, Ridge, 2:27.21; 2. Armendariz, Ridge, 2:33.37; 3. Moyer, North, 2:35.38. Lynch's easiest
win of the night.
- 1,600--1. Lynch, Ridge, 5:25.86; 2. Guzman, Gar, 5:33.60; 3. Wittenberg, Sha, 5:38.89. As per usual,
Guzman (Garces) took the lead and a pack of six followed her through the first lap. After two laps it was Guzman in front with Lynch on her heels. On the third lap, Lynch made her move and kept her lead to the finish for her first win of the meet.
- 3,200--1. Lynch, Ridge, 12:24.97; 2. Wittenberg, Sha, 12:25.69; 3. MIllwee, Sha, 12:52.77. Lynch and
Wittenberg ran together the whole race. On the homestretch, Lynch pulled away for her third win of the night.
- 100H--1. Jackson, Fron, 14.91; 2. McDonald, BHS, 16.91; 3. Lee-McNeill, Lib, 17.01. Jackson won by 2
seconds and showed why, she will be returning the state meet again this year.
- 300H--1. Jackson, Fron, 46.71; 2. McDonald, BHS, 48.95; 3. Chelsey, Stock, 49.75.
- 4x100 relay--1. Golden Valley (Shaw, Epps, Hidalgo, Olison), 50.73; 2. BHS, 51.17; 3. Highland, 52.67.
Golden Valley took the win over a Driller team that was missing 3 of its top runners due to other commitments.
- 4x400 relay--1. BHS (Hairston, Wandick, White, McDonald), 4:16.46; 2. Liberty, 4:17.20; 3. Golden
Valley, 4:23.08. The 1600 relay is always a crowd favorite and this one did not disappoint. Wandick of Bakersfield ran a great third leg and handed it off to White with a slight lead. At the start of the final lap, Finch of Liberty took the lead and on the backstretch it looked like Liberty might take the win. But White just tucked in behind and waited for the right time to make her move. On the homestretch, White took the lead and got her second win of the night.
- HJ--1. Crowe, Cen, 5-0; 2. Ellis, Fron, 4-10; 3. Bagsby, West, 4-8.
- PV--1. Klinchuch, Lib, 11-6; 2. Giulianmo, Stock, 8-6; 3. Cabello, Han. West, 8-0. Klinchuch hurt her foot
at the EB Relays and has been wearing a boot on her foot since then. She has been told she can compete and her 11'6 on one good foot, affirms her top ten in the state status. She would of tied for first in the boys competition!
- LJ--1. Epps, GV, 18-1; 2. Scott, GV, 16-1.5; 3. Fitch, Lib, 15-7.25.
- TJ--1. Collatz, Stock, 36-7.75; 2. Dial, Fron, 31-3.75; 3. Hosey, Gar, 30-5. With Alexander of Centennial
sitting out this meet, Collatz had an easy win in what is becoming yet another event that she excels at.
- SP--1. Jelmini, Sha, 49-10.75; 2. Rasley, Sha, 37-4.75; 3. Henry, North, 32-7.25. The nation's top thrower,
shows why she is top ranked.
- Discus--1. Jelmini, Sha, 173-8; 2. Collatz, Stock, 156-10; 3. Little, Lib, 108-2. Two great throws by two
state bound athletes. Jelmini won both throws at state and it would be nice to have these two go one two at state.
Boys finals results
- Ridgeview 128.33 Bakersfield 86.5 Centennial 72.33
- 100--1. Love, Han. West, 10.83; 2. Carter, Ridge, 11.21; 3. Hunt, BHS, 11.26. Vontrail Love is my favorite
sprinter name and he is fast too. Almost did not recognize him because in the past, he has sported a retro look with white tube socks and a white headband holding up his afro. Taking second in the 100 and not even running in the fastest heat, was state triple jumper Johnny Carter (10) who beat out Hunt (10) of Bakersfield.
- 200--1. Purvis, Ridge, 22.57; 2. Thieleke, West, 22.79; 3. Newman, GV, 23.00. Isiah looked good in the
200, after a poor showing in the 400.
- 400--1. Taylor, Lib, 51.57; 2. Thieleke, West, 51.61; 3. Miller, BHS, 52.68. It looked like West High would
take the 400, but he tied up at the finish and Taylor of Liberty took it at the line.
- 800--1. Schwartz, Foot, 2:00.16; 2. Lewis, Ridge, 2:01.23; 3. Van Zandt, High, 2:02.18. Schwartz lead the
field through the first 400 and took the win.
- 1,600--1. Schwartz, Foot, 4:25.75; 2. Lewis, High, 4:41.59; 3. Ariey, 4:42. A large field caused a couple
tumbles, so the race had to be restarted. As usual, Schwartz took the lead from the start, with a large pack behind him. At the 800, Holt (Bakersfield 12) and Lewis (Highland 11) took the lead behind Schwartz. At the 1200, Lewis opened up a lead on Burke (Stockdale) and Holt and they looked like a lock for the next three places behind Schwartz. But then out of the chasing pack, Ariey (Bakersfield 12) dropped a sub 65 second last 400 and challenged Lewis for second place. Ariey is known as a 3200 runner and today, he dropped 10 seconds in the 1600.
- 3,200--1. Baker, Ridge, 10:07.15; 2. Garcia, Ridge, 10:11.98; 3. Handel, Sha, 10:14.27. For the first 1600,
there was a pack of five and slowly runners fell of the pack.
- 110H--1. Jones, GV, 15.41; 2. McCurks, Ridge, 16.03; 3. King, Cen, 16.32.
- 300H--1. Singh, Ridge, 41.22; 2. King, Cen, 41.36; 3. Miniweathers, West, 41.39.
- 4x100 relay--1. Ridgeview (Robertson, Hobbs, Williams, Purvis), 42.98; 2. (tie) BHS, 43.74; 3. (tie)
Stockdale, 43.74. With addition of Purvis, Ridgeview has been taking the 400 relay recently.
- 4x400 relay--1. Centennial (Grimes, Diller, Clayton, Moore), 3:26.01; 2. Ridgeview, 3:26.68; 3. Liberty,
3:29.06. The last event of the night and it was a barn burner with Centennial defeating pre-meet favorite Ridgeview.
- HJ--1. Robbins, West, 6-4; 2. Johnson, GV, 6-2; 3. Thompson, Stockdale, 6-0. 6'6 jumpers McCulloh
(Garces) and Griggs (Bakersfield) sat out this meet.
- PV--1. Garcia, GV, 11-6; 2. (tie) Bemiller, Cen, 10-6; 2. (tie) Barron, Sha, 10-6.
- LJ--1. Affentranger, Lib, 21-7.25; 2. Carter, Ridge, 21-1.5; 3. Grimes, Cen, 20-10.5.

won by five feet and was followed by three Drillers.
