 Chris Schwartz (Foothill) and Tijerra Lynch (Ridgeview) were Kern Invite champs with
excellent times of 14:59 and 18:58 on the rain soaked course. Mcfarland boys won the
team title with 4 runners in the top 5 (25 points). Lynch lead her team to the girls title
(40 points).

The rain let up by the time of the varsity races but the conditions were soggy. Often
when it has not rained in awhile, the oils on the roads make even the road slippery.
Plus there was lots of puddles too avoid. The varsity course also has several large
sections of grass that the 2 mile course doesn't cover. Despite these conditions and
the lack of experience on them. Almost everyone ran well and i didn't hear of any
mishaps.

 The girls race started off with a slight drizzle but it fortunately stopped so I and others
could shoot the event. From the start, Lynch (Ridgeview), Lopez (North) and Guzman
(Garces) took the early lead. By the 1000 meter mark Wittenberg (Shafter) along with
a couple others had joined them.

 Just before the two mile point was the tricky downhill through the bridge back towards
the starting area. Where the original pack of four were tightly bunched. This group
remained together as they entered the last half mile section of the course.

Lynch took over the lead coming done the final road with Wittenberg in second. Behind
them was Guzman and Lopez followed by two of Lynch's teammates. At the end Lynch
broke 19 minutes on the course.

In the boys race, Schwartz (Foothill) quickly took the lead. At the 1000 meter mark,
he was followed by a pack of Mcfarland and Ridgeview runners. By the time he got to
the quick downhill before the 2 mile, he had a sizeable lead. He was followed by
Cisneros and Garcia of McFarland.

Behind them was a pack of four (2 Ridgeview and 2 Mcfarland). This order stayed the
same as the race entered the last half mile. In the end, the order remained the same.
Schwartz and then four Mcfarland runners. Sandwiched between Mcfarland's 4 and 5
runner was Curtis Kelly (Stockdale freshman) and Brian Solis (Ridgeview) with 200
yards to go.

Meet Preview:
The Kern Invite is the best local meet around (The Wolfpack Invite is a very close second) because it is the one
meet where all the local schools meet head to head. All the SEYL and SWYL schools compete and most of the
Kern County schools also run. The course is the league meet course and is a good preview of the following
Thursday's action.

In the team competition the McFarland boys will defend their team title but Ridgeview will keep them on their
toes. If Ridgeview falters, Highland, Stockdale, East, Wasco and Bakersfield all have strong teams.

  • McFarland is super tough and poised to take their tenth state title this year. They have won or came in second in
    almost every meet they have run in this year. Often crushing much large schools in the process. Last week they
    won the Mt Sac D4 Sweepstakes race with 5 runners in the top ten, they also came in 5th in the JV Nationals race
    at Mt Sac. If they fielded two squads at the Kern Invite, they might go one and two.
  • Ridgeview almost broke 85 minutes (sub 17 average) at the Roughrider meet a few weeks ago. Only
    Mcfarland in recent years has broken this barrier. They have a super solid team lead by Baker, Garcia
    and Solis and any of these three could be number one for them on any given day. They are also
    undefeated in SWYL dual meet action
  • Highland went undefeated in the SEYL dual meet action this year and have a very tough trio leading them.
    Van Zandt, Lewis and Thomas won a SEYL title , took second at Valley and ran as a team at the State
    meet last year.
  • Stockdale has a young squad who ran really well at Mt Sac. If they all run in the varsity race, watch out. I
    believe they came in second in SWYL dual meet action.
  • East also has a young squad who have been getting faster and faster with each meet. In SEYL dual meet
    action they came in third, only losing to Highland and Bakersfield in very close races. Last week they ran
    a very good race at the Meadow Park Invite.
  • Wasco always has good squads and this year's is no different. They do well at local invites and last week
    came in 3rd in their Mt Sac race with a fine team time of 88:07 (team average of 17:37) .
  • Last but not least our my Drillers. They are a veteran team with six seniors and a junior who only lost to
    Highland in dual meet action. Lead by Ariey who only lost to Chris Schwartz in dual meet action, the
    Drillers hope to come on strong at the end of the season.

To give you an idea of the athletes each school has. HERE are his team rankings.

On the girl's side, Ridgeview is the team to beat. Other top teams are Stockdale, North, Highland, Shafter,
Foothill and Bakersfield.

  • Ridgeview went undefeated in SWYL dual meet action and won most of the invites they entered. Like their boys
    team, they have a lot of depth. Lynch and Huziar are always in the front of every race they run.
  • Stockdale has a very large team and their numbers is their strength, They don't have a front runner but their pack
    is always near the front of the race.
  • North is lead by Lopez who is a threat to win a meet. If North had not lost Carlson, they would be right up there. Of
    course, one never knows if Carlson might not make a late season return.
  • Shafter over recent years, makes it to the state meet almost every year. Wittenberg won the Wolfpack Invite and
    might win this one too and starting with a 1 in your team score is huge in a big meet.
  • Highland is lead by Nicole Berry and her team only lost one dual meet this year to Bakersfield. They have been
    running well at invites recently and their coach knows have to bring teams to their peak at the end of a season.
  • Foothill is lead by Natalie Fernadez who had a sub 20 performance at Mt Sac last week. Foothill always has large
    teams and I am sure that someone out of that number will step up and improve their team's performance.
  • The Drillers were SEYL champs in 2007 and most of that team is back this year. The Drillers are lead by SEYL
    champ Baker and the rest of the team are sophomores too. This year they won all their SEYL dual meets and
    expect to defend that title in a few weeks time. The Kern Invite will be their first serious invite.
