Highland and Ridgeview won the boys and girls team titles. Chris Schwartz (Foothill Sr.) and Sarah Baker (Bakersfield Soph.) defended their SEYL titles. On the SWYL side, Alex Garcia (Ridgeview) and Tijerra Lynch (Ridgeview) won individual titles and lead their teams to team titles. Today was a tale of two very different leagues. In the SWYL, it was a changing of the guard. For years, Randy Jones's Centennial squads dominated the SWYL. His boy's squads were undefeated for over 5 years in duals and I have been told that his girl's squads had been undefeated since Centennial opened. This year, Adam Setzer's young squads ended those streaks and went undefeated in dual meets. They also won the league meet in a dominating fashion. With all the young talent Ridgeview has, the Wolf pack may go on a winning streak of their on now. Of course, Stockdale has very large teams and they are young too but right now Ridgeview is very dominate in the SWYL. If you have a SWYL report, I would like to share it. Since I am a SEYL coach (Bakersfield), I don't know the SWYL story very well. Please send me your reports to andynoise@yahoo.com. In the SEYL, things are not the same as the SWYL. Highland continued its winning ways but the competition has been fierce. Last year, their boys team was very tough and won league very handily but were challenged by Foothill. This year they went undefeated in duals but were challenged by Bakersfield in the duals (They beat Bakersfield 26 to 29) and by East at the league meet. In the end, they meet every challenge and are the SEYL champs again. With their tough trio of juniors and large supporting cast of younger runners, Coach Mayberry will be in the thick of it again next year. Last year, East only had Oscar Fuentes for the most part but this year they have a young squad that came on strong at the end of the year. They lost to Highland and Bakersfield in duals but gave Highland a run for its money in the league meet. East also won the boy's JV race and they will be back next year for sure. This year they came in third in the duals and second at the league meet and tied Bakersfield for second in the overall SEYL standings. Bakersfield was a veteran squad this year. The team was six seniors and one junior throughout the year. The core of the team (Ariey, Edquist, Purcell and Anderson) have been together since 2006, when Coach Anderson took over the team. That first year they did real well in frosh/soph races: winning the Mount Whitney Invite, coming in second to McFarland (30 to 42) at the Kern Invite and winning the SEYL frosh/soph title. That year Bakersfield's varsity was not a factor in duals or the league meet. In 2007, the quartet teamed up with Van Matre (Sr) and two newcomers, Holt (Jr.) and McCarthy and improved to 4 and 2 in duals but came up short in the league meet. This year, the team went 5 and 1 in duals and only lost to Highland by three points in the last dual meet of the season. The team had a strong five but never found a strong 6th and 7th runner. The bench was very thin especially when compared to Highland or East. The five lead by Ariey (who only lost to state champ Chris Schwartz) went into the league meet, knowing they were up against two very tough squads. After Schwartz took off, the lead pack was Ariey, Van Zandt (Highland) and East. With a quarter mile, Ariey had a good lead but Van Zandt (with his sub two minute 800 speed) and a Herrera (East Sr) cut the lead down to yards with a 100 yards to go and ended up taking second with Herrera getting third. Ariey got 4th and broke sixteen minutes for the first time. Sandles from Golden Valley took 5th and then Highland's Lewis and Turner took 6th and 7th. Bakersfield's Edquist and Holt came in tenth and eleventh. In the end, Bakersfield came in third and tied with East for second place overall. With such a senior ladened team, Bakersfield will be a very different squad next year. The good news for Bakersfield is that two of their underclassmen (Langston and Elliot) did place in the top ten in the frosh/soph race and will join Anderson on the varsity squad next year. On the girls side, Bakersfield does have youth on its side. In 2007, Sarah Baker lead her squad to a team and individual title. She and her fellow freshmen, Gabby Lerma and Gracie Garcia only lost to Foothill in duals. Then at league meet they won the race with a clutch performance by senior Sandy Felix. They also got a lot of help from Highland to take the league overall title. Foothill was first after the duals and the only way Bakersfield could win an outright title, was for Highland to beat Foothill at the league meet and they did. This year, the young Bakersfield trio was joined by sophomore Emily Shuford but could never find a strong 5th girl. They went undefeated in duals but in big meets, not having a 5th was a problem. So they were looking for some outside help like they got last year. Ironically, Foothill could be that help this year. Highland was in second behind Bakersfield in the dual meets followed by Foothill. If Foothill could beat Highland, there would be a three way tie for first! Everyone would have 20 points (1st - 12 pts, 2nd - 10 pts and 3rd - 8 pts). In the end, Highland beat Foothill by one point and took the outright SEYL team title with 22 points, Bakersfield came in second with 20 and Foothill came in third with 18. Even more ironic is that if Sarah had not won her second SEYL individual title against Natalie Fernadez of Foothill, Foothill would of won the league meet and there would of been a three way tie for first place! How does one win a League Team Championship? A team has to be good in two types of meets: Dual meets and a seven school league meet. In a dual meet, one can win the meet with three good runners. Go 1,2,3 and you win as long as your 4th and 5th runner finish the race. In a league meet, you need at least 5 good runners and a 6th one would be nice in case of a tie. In a league meet, every place is super important. In 2006, the Drillers won the Mt Whitney Invite 58 to 59 because their 6th man beat the other teams 5th man! Locally, we make the dual meet record half the score and the league meet results the other half. The points are allocated as such:

Chris Schwartz (Foothill SR) is the defending Champ. Now if Garces, Liberty or Foothill got in the top three at the league meet, things could get really crazy. What makes the team race exciting is that the top runners on the other teams can help or hurt the contending teams even if their team isn't that good. How does Highland win the league title?
How does Bakersfield win the league title?
How does East win the league title?
