The Driller Cross Country Team is going to Mammoth for a week (8/11 to 8/15) to train at altitude. Photos HERE (i will be adding photos daily).
The mammoth crew:
mammoth diary:
- the guest speakers were coach bob larsen, Meb Keflezighi, and dan browne at the pasta feed. coach larsen spoke
about the numerous athletes that have trained with him at mammoth and the philosophy behind his program. meb talked about a typical training day and dan spoke about their warm-up routine. they all answered questions from the audience too.
- the pasta feed is hosted by the mammoth lakes visitor center and all the food and beverages are provided by the
local community. besides the good food, they also have guest speakers at the event.
- after the long run, everyone was proud of how well they and the team ran. They were also tired when we got back
to the condo. But we had a pasta feed to go to and despite wanting to lay around the condo, we knew we didn't want to miss this event.
- the long run started at the condo and went downhill to town for the first couple miles. Then they head west up the
brutal climb. They stayed together up the climb and when they summited, they had about 45 minutes left, so they did the remaining run around the twin lakes. After their run, they refueled and several took a dip in twin lakes.
- Thursday morning was a little quieter, the pavement guys were not tearing it up any more but they were moving it.
This allowed the guys to sleep in a little later. Which was good because to day was the epic long run. The team decided they wanted to do a two hour run up a brutal climb to twin lakes.
- Wednesday evening we played poker and watched the Olympics. David won after surviving an all in against me
early in the night. He had king eight off suit and got running diamonds to beat my two pair on the flop and win with a flush. Ariey got runner up again.
- since we were all but beat, we decided to have a big breakfast of eggs and eggos and watched saving private
Ryan the rest of the morning. In the afternoon we decided to go for a hike to lake arrowhead. It was a 3 to 4 mile hike up to this beautiful mountain lake. The boys caught a trout and saw several does.
- we have really like our condo, but Wednesday morning really sucked. After we checked in and were unpacked our
condo people told us the parking lot was going to be resurfaced. Well at 8 am they had the pavement removal machines tearing the pavement right in front of our condo! It was an unreal racket and woke up everyone. It really chapped our hides plus we have to park our van on the street which is quite a ways from our condo. Not good.
- after our late night Tuesday poker tournament, we watched the under 16 year old Chinese beat our of age girls.
We all agreed that the Chinese cheated and there was nothing anyone could soothe ultimate home court advantage.
- in the afternoon, the team went and played some football. While Christopher and myself stayed at the condo and
watched the Olympics. In the evening we went to mammoth creek park and the team ran up to mammoth rock trail. They hoped to do a flat run but ended up going up some steep roads. When we got back to the condo, we had burgers and then played some poker. In the beginning Christopher was catching cards but in the end john won.
- since we left Bakersfield, ariey has been talking up grumpy's sports bar's all you can eat taco Tuesday. It had
almost attained the mythic status of his titanic rock on the grapevine. So we went there for lunch. They weren't great but it was all you can eat so they scarfed down as many as they could eat. Afterwards, we played some pool and i took down ariey in an epic match.i doubt there will be a rematch.
- Tuesday morning, we beat ourselves out of bed at 8am, ate some and then went for a another 40 minute run
through the mammoth valley. Then we hit vons to restock and saw a lot of other teams doing the same thing. By the time we got back to the condo, we were tired and hungry again. We tried to watch a pre dvd but it died so we ended up watching team USA beat team Italy in water polo.
- following Monday's run, the team made pasta with a tomato sauce sprinkled with hot dogs. David and Zack did
most of the cooking. Christopher did most of the eating and ariey did the clean up. After dinner, we watched the Olympics and were in bed by 10pm.
- after playtime at the condo, the team went for its first run in the evening. Then ran to the panorama dome lakes
and by the time they got it was kind of cold with a nice breeze. I am sure the altitude has its affects but for us the hills are challenging for us too.
- the condo is amazing! It is three floors with excellent beds and great furnishings. It is almost like being on an
episode of the real world when the team enter the place. Everyone ran around admiring the place and trying to decide which bedroom they were going to take. It was like Christmas morning here!
- mammoth is on like donkey kong. We finally made it here after two years of trying and it was worth it. We left
campus before 8 am and were in the condo by 1 pm. Along the way we stopped at gus's jerky stand, the worst smelling jack n the box on earth and convict lake.
- HERE is where we are staying.
- the driller cross country team is having a car wash for $5 at BHS on Saturday. Please show your support!
- i got the van and we got the condo. So we are good to go. We are having a car wash at BHS on Saturday from
8am to noon. So get your car washed and help support driller cross country. I did some research and we may pass on yosemite. It cost $20 for a car load and vans are charge $10 per passenger so i doubt we will go that way.
- we plan on leaving Monday morning and stopping at woodward park for a morning run. then heading to mammoth
via yosemite park. Click HERE for our route.
