  • My co-male athletes of the meet are Isiah Purvis (Ridgeview 12) and Chris Schwartz (Foothill 12). If
Isiah had not been DQed for a uniform violation in the 400, I would of gave him the nod. He won the
200 and 400 and was on both winning relay squads. Schwartz won the 1600 and 3200 easily and
was second in the 800. In both of his wins he just ran with the pack until it was time to go for the win.

  • Schwartz's 1600 was 16 seconds slower than his season best of 4:14 and he seemed content to run
with athletes who he has known for years. It reminded me of the last stage of the Tour De France
where Lance has won the race and the ride into Paris is a festive time. Then once they hit Paris for
the final laps of the race, the niceties end.
  • At the 800, Schwartz and Ariey were in the lead and that is where Schwartz made his move to take
over the race. By the 1200, he had a sizable lead and kept it to the end. Ridgeview's Baker and
Garcia out ran Lewis (Highland) down the homestretch for second and third.
  • Having almost 8 runners under 4:40 makes this final local invite a nice way for Schwartz to leave his
    friends and fellow competitors.

  • Schwartz's 3200 was 43 seconds slower than his season best of 9:12 and was due in part to the
farewell party lasting for 8 more laps. The weather was great for a fast race but no seemed interested
in running hard as this first lap photo shows. Lap two the trend continued with Curtis taking a turn at
    the lead.
  • On lap three the pack was still in tact but the there was a victim of the pedestrian pace. Robby Baker
got stepped on and lost a shoe much like his teammate Isiah did in the 4 x 100 at the West Coast
Relays. Isiah finished his leg but Robby ran a lap or two and dropped out before he injured himself.
  • I picked up his shoe and gave it to his mom and commented that he should stop on the next lap
and put it back on. The consensus was the race was pretty slow and he could of done it and not last
    much time.
  • The lead pack went through the 1600 in a time over 5 minutes and Schwartz made a surge and only
three followed. Soon only Garcia of Ridgeview remained. Coming down the homestretch Garcia
even made a move to over take Chris but when Chris sensed him coming he took off like a bullet for
    the win.

relay was the fourth fastest valley performance this season. Bakersfield and Stockdale had season
best as well and were only 1/100th of a second a part and moved into 6th and 7th best in the valley.

the finish showed sub ten and got a roar from the crowd. The wind and competition blew seven athletes into

  • After the first lap, Schwartz and Lewis had separated themselves for the pack. Then Jerrid Lewis (Ridgeview
    11) did what he has gotten quite good and ran down his fellow competitor on the homestretch. He beat Jake
Van Zandt by 3/100ths of a second at West Coast 800 and had the rare privilege of beating Schwartz in the
800 at the Patriot game. He also ran on the winning 4 x 400 team later in the evening. Seven Bakersfield
athletes are in the valley top 20: Lewis 5th, Van Zandt 6th, Schwartz 7th, Burke 8th, Lewis 14th, Barger 17th

  • Senior Brushay Wandick (Bakersfield 12) is my female athlete of the meet. All one needs to do is
look up at the list of winners and see Wandick there four times. At most local meets she goes too the
story is the same. She went to state last year in the 200 and hopes to return with both her relay teams
    this year.

  • Despite windy conditions, Amanda Klinchuch (Liberty 12) went 11'6 and just missed equaling her
season best of 12 feet. Sadly, the meet she went 12 foot earlier in the season has never reported the
meet results to anyone. Amanda is number 2 in the valley by one inch. Freshman Giuliano is in the
    top 11.

  • Tildahl (Tehachapi) took down a strong field in the 800 with a 2:24 which is number 13 in the valley.
The 800 was expected to be a showdown between Lynch and Baker with Lopez and unknown
because she just came back to North after spending most of the season running in Tennessee. But
Danielle had her own plans. Lopez took the lead with 300 to go and looked like time back East was
going to pay off. But down the homestretch Tildahl took the win. Lopez recently signed with CSUB to
run track and cross country for the Roadrunners with her former teammate Candace Carlson.
