Race Recap:
- After having a week of on again, off again rain, it was nice to wake up race
day with clear, sunny skies. When we got to the race, it was cold but sunny and the crowd was large. Before the race, I talked to Robby Baker (Ridgeview Jr) and Sara Stidham (Bakersfield Jr) and their moms who also ran the race. Robby is looking forward to the upcoming track season and Sarah plans on swimming this spring but also said she is recruiting for the fall cross country season.
- Before the race David Bacus (won 10k) and Ryan Lucker (CSUBer who got
second in 5k) were hanging out together and I joked that it looked like the winner's podium. I also congratulated David on his fine performance at last week's BUMR run. He ran a sub three marathon at the BUMR for first place. He plans on running the OC marathon in May.
- The Rosedale Racers were out in full force and I talked to their coach and
parents about some of their results at the cross country nationals. They had 2 medalist at the AAU National cross-country championship in Alabama back in December, and a few near misses. 9 year old Joey Fitzpatrick, finished 3rd in sub-bantam with a time of 11:01 for 3K. Isaac Trevino crossed in 16th with a time of 11:22 in the 11 yr old race. Jared Ryan finished 36th in the 10 year old race with a time of 12:09 for 3K, and little Ms. Makenzie Ryan finished 29th in the 8 year old 2K race with a time of 9:27. Boston Fitzpatrick and Zachary Ryan were 39th and 48th, respectively in the 11 year old race with times of 12: 04, and 12:40. The Rosedale Racers Competitive Youth Racing Team is taking sign-ups. More info HERE.
- Before the start, I spoke to John Purcell (Bakersfield Sr) who was out taking
photos for the yearbook. He and I crossed paths a number of times during the race and I hope to get his photos for my site.
- Oscar Miranda (Wasco Sr) was running the 5k after a long layoff, he had a
good cross country season but got injured late in the season and missed some of the championship meets. He is planning on running next week's BTC Half marathon. Last spring he ran a quick 1:23 at the BTC Half and came in 6th overall. The race for top high schooler should be a good between Oscar, my son and a couple other runners next Saturday.
- Then the race began with a mad dash to the first turn. After the frantic start, I
jogged over to the aid station (near the half way point of the 5k) and soon the lead runners came by. Out front was Oscar Fuentes (Cal Poly SLO/East) Ryan Lucker (CSUB/Stockdale) and Robby Baker (Ridgeview Jr) and this is how they finished in the 5k (Will discus finish later on).
- Not far behind them was David Bacus who went on to win the 10k. He was
followed by #360 (came in second in the 10k) who was running with the Rosedale Racers coach (ran the 5k). My son was behind them and came in third in the 10k. This order remained the same to the finish in the 10k. The 10k was 6.3 miles instead of 6.2 miles. So everyone's time was on the slow side. If one adjusted the times, David was under 35 minutes and my son was right 38 flat.
- Now I did not see the 5k finish but I hear it went to the wire and a bit
controversial. The 5k was basically one lap around the campus and the 10k was 2 laps. Because of the dual courses, there was some confusion towards the end of the 5k on where the course went. Who knows who went what way and I hear the finish was a photo finish. In the end, Oscar Fuentes was declared the winner of the 5k.
- In the women's 5k, birthday girl Pam Boyles won again and got sung to at the
awards ceremony. Check out the birthday singing video HERE (towards the end of the video). The 10k was won by David Bacus and Judith Mata.
- This race has nice handmade heart shaped awards and a nice raffle, that had
some pretty risqué items plus lots of food gift certificates. Now when it comes to my son and i can not get arrested. We never win anything and the same happen today too. I could use the food gifts because Christopher runs 60 miles a week and is 6'3 and weighs 130 pounds, all he does is eat.
- As we were leaving a real nice winner gave us her gift certificate and we
headed out for a late lunch. The gift was for two meals and drinks at Pappy's Coffee Shop. Turns out the owner's daughter goes to CSUB and her husband was real nice and came out and talked to us about the race and such. Then we sat down for our chicken fried steak feasts. The portions were huge and tasty. Christopher like the Dr. Peppers in mason jars and the oilfield decor was very interesting. I really liked their biscuits and gravy and could not even finish my meal. So I took it home for my chugs! Not really.
- So all in all the day turned out great. A nice sunny day, some fast times and
great prizes too. Plus the proceeds go to the CSUB PEAK Club program. The mission of the PEAK Club is to advance the professional development of PEAK Majors by supporting participation in professional conferences at the state and national level. The club is also dedicated to the development of health and wellness in Kern County through promoting and assisting community physical fitness activities.

Race Preview: Last year this race was the same day as the Lee Adams Open which was also held at CSUB. So it was the perfect race for my son, Christopher, to get his first overall win and he did in the 10k. This year the Lee Adams Open is following Saturday so the competition will be tougher. However there are lots of awards for the under 19 crowd in the 5k. So let Christopher defend his title against the old folks and run the 5k instead. Last year the medals were heart shaped and the overall winners got nice long sleeve shirts.
