  • Today was a nice day for a race. It may have gotten a little warm for some but all in all you could not
ask for a better day. Pete Wonderly (check out his Bentley) was MCing the event and sent out an
early warning that you had two options at the creek crossing: getting wet or chance running into the
    stinging nettle.

  • Sadly, I did both. I left early to find a place to shoot the creek crossing and I first attempted to go by
land, ran into the nettle and jumped into the water. So I ended up with wet shoes and stinging legs.
Plus the sun was right behind the upcoming runners so find a place to shoot was difficult at best. I
ended up choosing a shadowy shot instead of a bleached out by the morning sun background.

  • One duo who went straight threw the creek were the Bakers. Maggie and her mom Sally went
blasting threw the water and Maggie had a big smile on her face the whole way. Maggie ended up
running 22:25 (7:14 pace) for the 5k and came in 7th overall. By the way, she is eleven! I sure hope
6th place finisher Bryan Peachey (22:24) narrowly missed being caught by Maggie and that he did
not run her down at the finish. I later found out that she almost caught him.

  • I barely made it up the hill before Anna came flying by in first place with a commanding lead over her
    training partner Bruce Deeter.

  • This is when I realized that i had blown through 500 of the 600 shots my little Canon PowerShot
could take. This threw a wrench in my plans of wogging (combination of walking and jogging) most
of the course and taking a lot more photos on the course too. (I still got in six miles according to
my Garmin GPS watch) so at the four mile aid station, I wogged back to the finish to get my Canon
Rebel out and shot the finish.

  • As I continued on my way to the first aid station a number of 5k runners were heading back to the
creek. My plan was to run around the orange orchards in the opposite direction and catch the action.
As expected I barely started my journey as David Bacus (1:00:39 - pace 6:04) flew by. He was
followed by Javier Cruz (second overall - 1:05:16 - 6:32 pace). A pack of three was behind him that
    included:
    3          Steve Dirkse          1:07:17          6:44          1/7          3/26          M3039
    4         Cregg Weinmann         1:12:11         7:14         1/8         4/26         M5059
    5         Chris Felix         1:12:42         7:17         2/7         5/26         M3039
Dirske obviously pulled away quite a bit by the end of the race. Click HERE to see the rest of the
athletes behind them on the orchard loop.

  • By the time I got back to the first aid station (Where the course returned to the creek.) David and
Javier had finished the middle part of the race and where heading back to the creek. I ran onward
and snapped photos of the ten milers returning on the out and back part of the course. (Photos of
them start HERE.) By the time I got to the road crossing, I had used up my memory card so I wogged
back to the finish line but I did have a couple shots left and had to actually jog to get a few second
    creek crossing photos HERE.

  • Since my little camera was full, I give up my idea of doing the last orange orchard loop backwards
and shooting runners out on the course. So I decide to hang out with MC Pete and take some
finishing photos that start HERE. Plus I had some bagels and a breakfast burrito while Pete
announced the winners and Leslie King and Vicki Rigby (The Texan Now) handed out the medals.
