    On the girls side, Sarah Baker (Jr) won her third straight SEYL individual title and also helped her team win (won
    league meet and were 6 and 0 in dual meets) it's second SEYL team title in three years (won in 2007) as well.
    She took control of the race early on and won by a wide margin. In the end Sarah Baker dominated the SEYL
    girls race. Her time of 18 minutes, 42 seconds was 45.1 seconds faster than that of second-place finisher
    Jeannette Rodriguez of Highland.

    "The Highland girl kind of went out fast so I kind of stayed behind her for a little bit," Baker said "But then right
    around the mile mark I took off on my own. I felt like I could do it and I felt like I had enough in me to bring it home."
    Next up for her is the daunting task of qualifying for the state meet at valley next Thursday in the division one race.

    Gracie Garcia and Emily Shuford added sixth and seventh place finishes for the BHS girls, which beat Highland
    48-66. Foothill was third. The league title for the varsity teams is based equally on the dual meet record and the
    league meet results. Below is the final league standings

  1. The Drillers earned their second league title in three years with a win today (12 points) and an undefeated dual
    meet record (6 - 0 for 12 points). Sarah Baker, Gracie Garcia, Emily Shuford and Gabby Lerma are all juniors
    and so a third title should be within their grasp next season. Unfortunately they are in division one at valley and
    only two teams qualify from this super tough division to move on to state. One of those teams is Buchanan which
    is one of the top teams in the state. Also several other Clovis/Fresno teams are stacked with talent. The Drillers
    are currently ranked 7th.
  2. Foothill went 4 - 2 in duals (8 points) and came in third in the league meet (8 points) for a total of 16 points. This
    point total earned them second place in the overall league standings. Their top runner this year and the past three
    seasons was Natalie Fernandez who outkicked Liberty's Barton for third place. It was nice to see her win a sprint
    at league because the past two season she has run the exact same time as Sarah Baker and came up short
    each time. So her overall SEYL record is two seconds and a third. At valley Foothill is in division three and
    Natalie has a shot at returning to the state meet. As a team, the Trojans are in a difficult division were they are
    currently ranked tenth.
  3. Second for Highland at the league meet was a welcome result after their difficult dual meet season where they
    went 2 - 4 due to illness, injuries and just bad luck. The league meet result earned them 10 points and the dual
    meet record was worth 4 points. At valley, they are in the super tough division three where they are unranked.
    Their to runner Rodriguez will be competing for an individual berth to the state meet.
  4. Garces and Liberty tied for fourth in the overall SEYL standings. Garces started off the season with a 3 - 1 dual
    meet record but then illness and injuries left them at the end of the season with a 3 - 3 record (6 points) and with
    their fourth place at league (6 points), they tied for fourth place with Liberty. Liberty had a 4 - 2 record (8 points)
    and were tied with Foothill going into the league meet but only managed a fifth place showing at the meet for 4
    points and ended the season with 12 points as well. Both schools are in division two and their top runner have a
    chance at qualifying for the state meet. Guzman (Garces Sr) qualified last year and Barton (Liberty Jr) is faster
    and healthier this year.
  5. Golden Valley came in sixth and East was 7th in the SEYL overall standings. East High's Garcia looks to return to
    state again this year.

    Tijerra Lynch (Jr) of Ridgeview defended her SWYL individual title with a controlled race and a great last half
    mile. Next up for her is valley where her team is the defending division three champ. The Stockdale girls won the
    SWYL team title with their win today and their 6 and 0 dual meet record.

    1. Stockdale has been the bridesmaid for years in the SWYL and it seems fitting that the final year of the SWYL
    they took the title. Their nemesis for all those years was Centennial who until last year had never lost a dual meet
    in SWYL competition! In 2007, a senior laden Centennial won a valley crown and their long time coach Randy
    Jones retired so 2008 looked like the Mustangs year.

    But Ridgeview fielded a fast young team,took the 2008 SWYL title and won their school's first valley cross country
    title too. With most of the Ridgeview squad returning and them picking up some more quick freshman, Stockdale
    was looking like it might never be the bride. But Stockdale got a fast freshman (Patel) of their own and used their
    large athlete pool to put together a very strong talented group whose 5 person gap was very close.

    While most schools have a front runner or two, Stockdale now had its front runner and four other girls who where
    not to far behind. This advantage is good in dual meets but it large field meets it is an even greater advantage
    because many schools have four good runners but can't find/develope that fifth. Their depth helped them beat the
    undefeated Ridgeview in a dramatic dual where Amber Nelson passed several runners down the homestretch to
    force a tie with Ridgeview. Their depth gave them the win that day because of the 6th runner tie breaker.

    With the win at the league meet, the Mustangs earned 12 point to go with the 12 they earned for their 6 - 0
    season and finally they were the bride and  SWYL champions. Their valley chances are tough because like the
    Drillers they are in division one and only two schools move on to state out of this super tough division. Currently
    Stockdale is ranked number 5 in D1. Like Baker, Patel has her work cut out for her to make state because she
    has to be one of the top five individual finishers and be in the top twelve in the race.

    2. At the one kilometer mark, Ridgeview's tactics were plain to see. i do not recall seeing a girl's field spread
    across the road like it was today. When you see that, you know the pace is slower then usual and that it is going
    to be a tactical race. In the SEYL, Baker was already pushing the pace and the pack was thinning and chasing
    her.

    In the SWYL race it looked like a dual meet between Stockdale and Ridgeview (with a couple North runners
    thrown in). After the race two time SWYL champ stated "I wanted to encourage them and it helped," Lynch said. "I
    wanted to win for my team today and forget about the individual stuff." Lynch, who didn't start running cross
    country until her sophomore year, spent most of the first part of the race hanging back with her teammates.

    individual stuff." In the last half mile she took the lead and the win. Behind her, things started to fall apart for the
    Wolf Pack. On the big hill past the mile mark,  Lashya Morgan fell face first to the ground during the race and
    skinned her arm and hip.

    By happenstance, her Coach was right there when she fell down but the freshman didn't let that deter her though.
    She went on to finish 9th while her teammates Tijerra Lynch (18:52.0) and Desiree Armanda (18:59.2) placed
    first and second. Despite these excellent finishes, Stockdale's 4th,6th,7th,9th and 11th place finishes were too
    much to overcome.

    One the boy side, Highland won it's third SEYL team title in a row with a win today and a 6 - 0 team record. They
    were lead by Colin Lewis (Sr) who was the SEYL champ today. Next for them is the valley meet were they have
    been runner up two years in a row in division two.

    Highland beat East 35-43 to claim the SEYL boys team title. Foothill was third with 72 points.
    The Scots had all five of its runner place in the top 14 including winner Colin Lewis (16:02.6) and runner up Jake
    Van Zandt (16:04.9). East's Joe Ramirez was third. "Me and my teammate Jake led most of the race and with
    800 meters left in the race I knew I had to go because he has a pretty good kick ," Lewis said. "I don't think I've
    ever won a race this big in my life so I'm just happy to win today."

    Last but certainly not least are the Ridgeview boys who repeated as SWYL champs. The had a perfect dual meet
    record and won today. Last year they came very close to making state in division three (they came in third) and
    this year they hope to make it. They were lead by Alex Garcia (Sr) who defended his SWYL title today.

    Ridgeview boys led by an Alex Garcia, Robby Baker, Brian Solis 1-2-3 finish tand beat Stockdale, winning 28-
    34. "Just winning it (the team title) means it all paid off, all those days of practice when you just wanted to quit,"
    Garcia said. It was a second straight league championship for Garcia who finished the 5-kilometer course with a
    time of 15:20.9.

Meet Preview:
    To win a league title, a team needs to excel at two different kinds of meets: The dual meets and the league meet.
    The dual meet is a head to head competition between two schools. Whereas the league meet is a competition
    between all the teams in the league.

    A school's dual meet record and it's place in the league are each worth 50% towards the overall title. Each dual
    meet win is worth 2 points and in the league meet the scoring is such:

  1. 12 points
  2. 10 points
  3. 8 points
  4. 6 points
  5. 4 points
  6. 2 points
  7. 0 points

    Below are the dual meet records as of 10.22.09. There are still a few meets that must be run because they were
    cancelled back in September because of the hot weather.

    SEYL Boys

    Highland (6-0 for 12 points) has been dominated on the team side by Highland and on the individual side by
    Chris Schwartz over the past few years. Schwartz is at Cal Poly SLO now but the trio who have been key to
    Highland's team success are seniors this year. They have put in yet another undefeated duel meet season and
    have been handing out a lot of 15s along the way.

    One earns a 15 by having your scoring five beat the other school's number one runner. The Scotsmen have done
    this three times this year and scored 18 the other times. Only three athletes have managed to crack Highland's
    scoring five and they all came in third behind Lewis and Van Zandt::

  1. Erick Bautista (Foothill)
  2. Connor O'Malley (Garces)
  3. Daymon Sandles (Golden Valley)

    East (5 - 1 for 10 points) started the year off with a lost to Highland but have been winning ever since. Last year
    they came on strong at the end of the season and only lost to Highland and Bakersfield in duels. At the league
    meet they got second and tied Bakersfield for second in the SEYL overall. Last year they had a young team and
    most returned this year. One does not seem them often at invites but I have seen them training hard on the
    weekends and expect them to run well at league and valley.

    Foothill (4 - 2 for 8 points) has a new head coach this year and a winning duel meet record as well. They have
    one athlete who has cracked Highland's scoring five in Bautista and have another (Lopez) who can. This year
    they are in the same position East was going into the league meet. If they can take second at the meet and East
    gets third, they will tie for second behind Highland.

    Liberty (3 - 3 for 6 points)

    Garces (2 - 4 for 4 points) has O'Malley who always performs well at league and valley. Has a knack for making
    state too.

    Bakersfield (1 - 5 for 2 points) went from 5 - 1 to 1 - 5 in a year.

    Golden Valley - (0 - 6 for 0 points) has Sandles who has a shot at an individual title depending on his race
    strategy. If he goes out hard there is a chance he could get the win in the Highland boys decide not to chase him
    down. If he leaves it to a kick, Van Zandt is a 1:56 800 runner and Lewis is a sub 4:30 miler.
  
    SEYL Girls

    Bakersfield (6 - 0 for 12 points) has been undefeated in dual meets the past two seasons but have been in
    search for a fifth runner since Sandy Flores helped them win an overall SEYL crown in 2007 with her great 5th
    runner performance. Last year, the Drillers had three runners in the top ten at the league meet but got third. They
    ended up taking second overall behind Highland.
    They have been lead for the past three years by Sarah Baker (Jr) who is looking for her third straight SEYL
    individual crown. She returns with her fellow juniors: Gabby Lerma, Emily Shuford and Gracie Garcia. From what I
    have seen so far this season, they have still not found their Sandy yet.
