  Mcfarland fell short this year in their bid for a tenth state title but have kept their
streak alive. In 2007 they came in 3rd, 2006 they came in 4th and 2005 they came in
5th. So 2009 will be their year to come in first. I really thought this was their year but
Big Bear was really tough. Big Bear had 4 runners in the top ten and five runners in
before McFarland's second man. This is Big Bear's third title in a row and the only Hall
(Father of Ryan and Chad.) on the team was their coach this year.
 The Highland boys (Runner-up at Valley) came in 22nd in the D2 race and their top
four will return in 2009. The Ridgeview girls (Valley Champs) came in 21st in the D3
race and will have 3 of their top 4 returning in 2009.

  • Division One Boys: No Kern athlete made it to state in the super tough division
    one. Curtis Kelly (Stockdale freshman) was the closest with his 15th place at
    valley for the boys and Sarah Baker (Bakersfield sophomore) with her 25th place
    was the closest girl. Dana Hills won the team race with a score of 70 to
    Buchanan's 85. Their team times were only 10 seconds apart (77:38 to 77:48).
    Dana Hills was lead by individual state champ Tyler Valdes (Sr) with a 15:05
    clocking. Buchanan was lead by Jonathan Sanchez (Sr) who came in 3rd in a time
    of 15:12.
  • Division Two Boys: Was won by Elias Gedyon (Loyola sophomore) with a time of
    15:01 and lead his team to a win over Thousand Oaks. Loyola's team time was
    88:04 (15:37 average). Highland was lead by Colin Lewis (95th place) and came
    in 22nd place at the state meet with a team time of 86:38 (17:20 average). Finish

  • Division One Girls: Was also won by Dana Hills with 65 points over Torrey Pines
    with 81. There team time was 91:10 (18:14 average).The race was won by Alex
    Dunne (Sr) of San Clemente in a time of 17:27.

  • Division Two Girls: Kaylin Mahoney (Saugus So) won this race and lead her
    Saugus team to a team title with a time of 17:34. Their team time was 90:06 (18:
    02 average). Kern finishers in th D2 race were: Natalie Fernandez (Foothill So) in
    108th place with a time of 19:51, 127th place Monica Guzman (JR Garces) 20:
    18, 131st place Lucy Garcia (JR East Baker) 20:21, 152nd place Nichole Berry
    (JR Highland) 20:55 and 157th place Cecilia Lopez (SR North Bake) 21:14. Finish

  • Division Three Boys: Mac Fleet (University Sr) won this race in a time of 15:08.
    Chris Schwartz (Foothill Sr) came in 7th place in a time of 15:29. Barstow lead by
    Isaac Chavez (2nd place 15:15) took the team title with a 31 point lead over
    Campolindo. Their time was 88:52 (15:47 average). Robby Baker (Ridgeview Jr)
    came in 75th place with a time of 16:28. Asencion Mendoza (Wasco Sr) came in

  • Division Four Girls: The D4 race was won by Sabrina Lopez (Sacred Heart Sr) in
    a time of 18:09.  La Reina won the team title with a time of 96:37 (19:20). Kern
    finishers included: 92nd place Megan Thompson (JR Taft) 20:47 and 137th place

  • Division Three Girls: The Valley Champ Ridgeview girls were lead by the 43rd
    place finish of Tijerra Lynch (So) and came in 21st in the D3 race with a team
    time of 103:51 (20:47 average). Corona del Mar won the team title with a time of
    94:15 (18:51 average). The race was won by Sammy Silva (Our Lady Sr) in a
    time of 17:35. Other Kern finishers were: 91st place Elizabeth Wittenberg (SR

 I had hoped to go to the state meet as a coach but being a Division 1 coach and
making it state in cross country is difficult. We had two outstanding athletes (Baker
and Ariey), who if they had been in other divisions, might of made it but in D1 the
challenge was too great. When I started coaching, I had decided to only go to the
state meet if I had athletes competing at the meet and in track that has been the case.
Since I started covering Kern athletics via this site, I amended my requirements to go
to the state meet. CIF grants media credentials to cover the state meets and if I got
one, I would cover the meet. Well the following explains why I am not at this year's
state cross country meet:

The State CIF is in receipt of your request for a photo credential to the
2008 CIF Cross Country Championships.
Your request, however, has been denied. The rationale for this decision is
the same as it was for your request to the 2008 CIF State Track and Field
Championships last spring. Unfortunately, the State CIF does not view
AndyNoise.com as a media outlet. While it is acknowledged that there are
numerous original photos on the site, that in and of itself does not
constitute a media outlet. Virtualy all editorial content on the site is
links to pre-existing information available on the internet, or links to
blogs. And while it may be convenient for people to find all that
information in one place rather than have to search multiple sites, that
also does not constitute a media outlet.
You are, of course, more than welcome to purchase a ticket and shoot photos
from any of the spectator areas along the course.

(f) SPORTSMANSHIP/CITIZENSHIP AWARD – Sportsmanship/Citizenship medals will be awarded to student-
athletes who demonstrate exemplary sportsmanship and citizenship throughout the season. Coaches are
encouraged to forward worthy nominees to the State CIF office.

ENTRANCE/PARKING/CONCESSIONS
(a) Athletes, coaches and officials - Entrance to Woodward Park will be at the North East gate
off Friant Road only (see map).
(b) Spectator’s entrance to Woodward Park will be at the South Gate off Audubon.
(c) Admission charges: General Admission - $10.00 CHILDREN - $5.00
Coaches must present ribbon and athletes their race number to be admitted to the park.
Pre-race admission tickets will be sold Friday, November 28, at Woodward Park, Mt. View
Shelter, from 12 noon - 4:00 p.m. Parking is allowed in designated areas only. All vehicles parked
illegally, inside or outside of the park, will be ticketed and towed. Do not park on any grassy areas
inside the park.
(d) A concession stand will be available at the park.

McFarland hopes to get its tenth state title this year. This year, they have almost won
everywhere they have competed with great pack style running. At Mt. Sac, they
handily defeated Big Bear, who is suppose to be their main rivals for the title. They
have not won a title since 2001 but came in 5th in 2005, 4th in 2006 and 3rd in 2007.
Lets hope they skip second place and take their tenth title this year.
At valley, they had a 33 second gap between their first runner and their 7th!   If one
scored the valley meet as a dual meet between McFarland and the rest of Kern
County, McFarland would win 25 to 30 or 26 to 29 if Mendoza (Wasco) out kicked
Nava.

Pretty impressive! According to my stats, McFarland is the only team in recent years
to break 85 minutes (17 minutes per runner) at Woodward. Their team time this year
at valley was 82:53. The All-Stars time was 82:33 with defending champ Chris
Schwartz saving the All-Stars for getting beat.
Highland makes a return to state last year with their second place finish at valley. Last
year Highland came in second to Centennial at valley and then came in 21st at the
state meet with a team time of 87:49. Highland is lead by the junior trio of Jake Van
Zandt, Colin Lewis, and Thomas Turner who have been the reason for the Scotsmen's
success over the past couple seasons. They went undefeated in dual meets and won
the SEYL meet again.
Before the season started, many expected the Ridgeview boys to be good but may
have overlooked the girls. Both squads went undefeated in duals and won the SWYL
meet too. At valley the girls dominated their race and the boys just missed out on a
trip to state. The boys had 4 runners in before Roosevelt's 4th but their 5th man came
in 45th to Roosevelt's 27th place.
On the girl's side, Lynch lead her squad to Ridgeview's first valley title. They had five
girls in the top 18 and had a team time of 102:43 which is fifth fastest on my list of
recent times. Ridgeview won a lot of invites this year and defeated Centennial in a dual
meet this year. This was the first dual meet lost for Centennial ever.

    She is known for blazing starts but put together a good run to make it to state this year.
    She was 5th at the SEYL meet but like her teammate O'Malley, she ran a great race at
    valley and got runner-up honors and a ticket to the state meet.

    has come in second two years in a row to Sarah Baker (Bakersfield) with the same time
    each year. At valley she got third and is going to state while Baker did not in the super
    tough D1 race.

    the SEYL meet and follows in her sister's footsteps with a state berth.
  • Nichole Berry                   HIG-B/Highland - Bakersfield                     Jr     20:30 (D2)  Her
    team won the SEYL title by one point and now gets to go to the state meet in what I
    believe is her first season of cross country.
  • Cecilia Lopez                   NBAK/North Bakersfield                           Sr     20:34  (D2) Came
    in 8th in the SWYL and now follows in the footsteps of former North Star Candace Carlson
    with a trip to the state meet.
  • Elizabeth Wittenberg            SHAF/Shafter High                                Sr     19:59 (D3). Won
    the SSL title this year and returns to the state meet again.
  • Megan Thompson                  TAFT/Taft High                                   Jr     21:12 (D4) I
    believe this is her first trip to the state meet.

    Independence is a new school with only underclassmen and Acacia is the school's very
    first state qualifier.
