USATF Central California Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships I have not been to one of these events since I was in high school and now I plan on not missing them in the future. In fact, I think I will go through with my plans of forming a club team and have them compete in these meets in the future. This year's event was held in Bakersfield for the first time in a number of years but the turn out of Bakersfield was limited. The host club, Rosedale Racers, had quite a few athletes and the Bakersfield Yellow Jackets had a couple athletes in some of the races. McFarland had a large boys squad and a good number of girls too. Corcoran had some athletes and Carl Hatley had a large of younger runners too. Plus there were a number of unattached runners. The course was a 1 km loop almost entire on grass with numerous twists and turns. There was also a slight bump of a hill on the course. The course was well marked with lots of flags and fencing. The first race of the day was an open race for adults. Most of the athletes thought they were running a 5k but found out minutes before the race that they were running a 3k. Even though there were only 5 runners in the race, it was competitive and fun to watch. The reason it was fun was two of the runners were also coaches. So all the Rosedale Racers and the Alicante athletes were running around cheering on their coaches. I didn't get any times but here is the order of finish:
The next race was the 3k Run CC Bantam Girls and was won by a wide margin (alsmost 2 minutes) by Sonia Holguin (Mcfarland) in a time of 11:53 (6:20 pace). Lead by McFarland High School's coach's son Abran Ayon, they had 8 athletes running under 6 minute pace for the 3k distance. Time: Check in 8:00am, Masters/Open race 8:45, First Youth race is for Bantam Girls and will be at approximately 9:15-9:30 am. Course: Bantam 3K, Midget 3K, Open/Masters 3K, Youth 4K, Intermediate and Young Men and Women 5K. Course is mostly grass, with some dirt and sidewalk, with two small inclines per lap of approximately 15 ft. elevation gain – Very FAST course. For ages Bantam to Young Men/Women. Registration deadline for youth athletes has passed. Many excellent runners will compete. Top 20 in each age division advance to Region 14 meet in Sacramento on Nov. 30. From there it is on to Nationals in Virginia. |
