Another great meet at Buchanan! They really know how to run a meet and they have a world class track
too! I can not wait for the valley and state meets to be held at Buchanan. Today a whole bunch of meet
records were broke and I bet many will be broken in the meets to come. Especially since two of the best
distance runners in the state, did not compete as expected today.

Chris Schwartz was entered in the 1600 and 3200 and Jordan Hasay was entered in the 800 but they did
not compete. But the other athletes, more than made up for their absence. .

Some personal highlights were:
  • Andrew Ariey (Bakersfield 12) going sub ten in the 3200 for the first time.
  • Jake Van Zandt (Highland 11) and Jerrid Lewis (Ridgeview 11) going 1:56 in the 800. Lewis won the
    race but they were both huge winners in my book.
  • The girl's 1600 relay were San Luis Obispo's anchor ran down Edison's anchor and brought the
    crowd to it's feet.

  • I should have been at the second exchange zone because that is where the craziness was. Cory Hobbs
    (Ridgeview) stepped on the heel of Isiah Purvis and his neon yellow  shoe went flying in the air. It went 10 foot
    in the air and traveled quite a distance too. Isiah ran his leg shoeless and with a nice gash on his ankle too.
    Despite all the drama, Ridgeview was still the fastest Bakersfield school in the 400 relay.

  • With state being at Buchanan, many teams that have not been to the West Coast Relays in recent years
    made appearances this year. George went out with the leaders and then took the lead for good after the first
    lap. The race between home town Bricks and Dubose was a dead heat with the out of towner taking second.

  • The Bakersfield bragging rights went to Baker who past Guzman on the last lap of the invite 1600.

Since it inception in 1927 the West Coast Relays has been one of the most exciting meets in track and field history.  
With the new world class track (Mondo) in place the meet should provide fast times. Forty schools were represented
totaling over  700 athletes, this year’s meet promises to be the same. On Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Buchanan High
School the tradition of the West Coast Relays caries on. This meet is the largest meet in the central valley and has
been growing each year. Finishlynx timing will be used for all running events. Three levels of competition
(invitational, seeded and open) provide true excitement in all events.

The West Coast Relays is the same site as the 2009, 2010 and 2011 State Track & Field Championship.
